  • Types of hedge plants – There are many different types of plant that are suitable to be used as a hedge. Some of the main types are evergreens this is because they have proven to be very easy to maintain once planted. Some of the different kinds of plants used as hedges include;
    • Boxwood shrubs – These are a popular choice with many people usually more for decorative purposes than boundary marking as they grow fairly slowly. However, when they have grown to quite a height they provide a lot of privacy because they are so dense. With them taking so long to grow they are usually planted along side a fence and once they are at the height the person desires they can then take down the fence.
    • Holly bushes – Holly bushes are used more for decoration and providing a little more security. If placed along the edge of fencing it will act as a deterrent to those wishing to intrude because they run the risk of injuring them selves. Although normally accompanied by a fence certain kinds of Holly bush have the ability to grow very tall and act as a privacy screen on their own.

There are some that are used to act as privacy boundaries, others are used for surrounding flower beds and some are just purely for design. The function that the hedge is to serve will determine how much maintenance the hedge will need. For example if you had a hedge that was acting as a land boundary then it would require less maintenance than a hedge that was perfectly shaped into a specific design.

When you have decided on the function you want the hedge to serve then you will be able to start deciding on the best kind of hedge for you. You would also have to think about the fencing you would use if it was needed temporarily while the hedge grew to full size. If you are really unsure then you would be best speaking to a professional who would be able to advise you on the best hedge and fencing for your needs.
